The introduction of identity verification is one of the key changes to UK company law under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023. This landmark legislation gave Companies House new and enhanced powers to help disrupt economic crime and support economic growth. Identity verification will provide more assurance about who is setting up, running, owning and controlling companies in the UK.

You will need verify your identity at Companies House if you are:
- a director
- the equivalent of a director – this includes members, general partners and managing officers
- a Person with Significant Control (“PSC”)
- an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (“ACSP”) – also known as a Companies House authorised agent and usually have roles such as accountants, solicitors or company formation agents
- someone who files for a company – for example, a company secretary
You can choose to verify your identity from 18 March 2025 but in the future it will be a legal requirement FOR:
- Authorised Corporate Service Providers – from 18 March 2025
- Directors and a Person with Significant Control – from 18 March 2025
- People who file at Companies House – not required to verify yet
